finds to fancy

happy friday everyone!

wow, it seems like forever since i've posted, even though i really only skipped a day! i hope you'll forgive me for the lack of a curated life this week- i was tending to the toddler daughter of some friends while they were busy having a new baby! to all you stay at home moms out there- i salute you- i was exhausted by the end of the day!

i've been out on hunt all morning and i found some fun things! i've got lots of prep to do so i can take things to the space at the Vintage Mall for the weekend, so today's post is a quick one.

remember the cool, red laundry hamper that Melissa shared in a finds to fancy back in February? well look at what i found today...

a blue one almost just like Melissa's! we have a knack for finding similar items, so it doesn't even really surprise me that i found one so much like her's. unfortunately for me, since i don't have a laundry room, i won't be keeping this one. that's good news for all of you who are planning on coming to The Farm Chicks Show though- since i'll be bringing it with me to the show!

what did you find this week? i'd love to share your very own finds to fancy- email me and we'll set it up!

gratitude

yesterday i finally managed to make it to the UW Surplus store on the one day a week they let the general public in! i didn't score as big as i was hoping to, mainly because i haven't been in a while and was not aware that people are now lining up an hour before they open, so a lot of folks beat me to things, but i did find some cool things like a whole box of bulldog clips!

bulldog clips are one of my favorite utilitarian things and i always nab the old ones i find at estate sales. they're super useful in a variety of ways and i like their industrial style. they come in a range of sizes, and sometimes even with magnets attached so you can use them on the fridge or filing cabinet.

one of my favorite ways to use them is for hanging art. framing things can be a bit spendy and since none of the art we have right now is super precious, i just use the clips to hang it all up! this method also offers the option to eventually frame things, since the clips don't damage the pieces.

even when i use other methods to hang things, the small bulldog clips work nicely as a weight to help keep posters from curling.

the clips also work well on inspiration boards, again when you don't want to damage the item you're hanging up. i have several screen prints i keep above my desk that i would like to frame someday, so for now they hang out on my inspiration area (aka the back of my mister's desk).

it may be a small, silly thing, but gratitude is not just for the big things right? finding little things to be thankful for in everyday life is important too and that box of clips brought a little extra gratitude to my week. (oh, and don't worry, i'm not keeping the whole box to myself! you'll find some in my booth at the farm chicks show).

what do you have gratitude for this week?

tried and true

tried and true is back after a short break, and this week we're getting to know a heritage brand that is celebrating it's 100th anniversary this year!

to celebrate 100 years, photographer Randall Ford is recreating vintage LL Bean catalog covers all year long!
{photo by Randall Ford, via LL Bean}
the spring catalog cover- love the expression on the mom's face!
{photo by Randall Ford, via LL Bean}
launched in 1912, LL Bean was started by Leon Leonwood Bean with the 'Maine Hunting Shoe', a boot that is still sold by the company today. throughout the company's 100 year history, they have added hundreds of thousands of products that are durable, affordable (especially for the durability), and classically styled, in most cases.

{vintage maine hunting shoes and photo via The Vintagerie}
for those who may think 'lumberjack' when you hear LL Bean, you may be surprised to see what they offer. recently they even added a new premium line- LL Bean Signature- and the clothes and accessories coming out under the Signature line are wonderfully stylish while remaining durable and classic.

{poplin dress and photo via LL Bean}

{whip cord suit and photo via LL Bean}

{canvas & leather hobo bag and photo via LL Bean}

{canvas work jacket and photo via LL Bean}
personally, i love the footwear LL Bean makes- i own both a pair of 'Bean Boots' and the 'Wicked Good Slippers'...

my boots are now almost five years old and still look brand new. they're perfect for Seattle- since it rarely snows enough to require full snow boots, the bootie style i chose is great year round and the durable leather and rubber construction holds up nicely in the rain and mud. they're my go to estate sale shoe since you never know what you're going to encounter out there!

the slippers, a sheepskin moccasin completely lined in shearling, are like clouds for your feet. shearling, a naturally wicking material, keeps moisture away from your feet so they're comfortable on cold and warm days alike. the rubber soles keep me from slipping around our hardwood floors, and are even sturdy enough to run the trash out to the alley in!

have you tried LL Bean? i'd love to know what you think! and don't forget- if you have a tried and true product or brand, i'd love to feature it here- email me and we'll set something up!

if you're interested in learning more about LL Bean's history, be sure to visit their blog, where they're celebrating 100 years of LL Bean all year long!

easter: our day in pictures

happy monday everyone! the sun is shining in Seattle so it really does feel like a happy day here- i hope it's the same for you!

my mister, my mom, and i had a lovely Easter and i took tons of photos so i thought i'd share them with you! i even made my first ever photoshop collage attempt (it took me forever, so i only did it with one series of photos, but hopefully i'll get better and faster at it soon)!

easter 'baskets'
we colored a few eggs...
...and played with the bubbles from our easter baskets under the cherry trees

they're a little crazy, but we had fun!
my mom gave me a little Pyrex refrigerator dish with a lid- it's the turquoise Amish Butterprint pattern, which i collect!
pretty vintage easter postcard
daffodils we got to take home from church
so cheery!
we had a very colorful meal, with multicolored carrots...
...and new potatoes.
aren't the purple ones stunning?
i decided on a simple, slightly rustic table for the meal
lots of turquoise glass
my favorite flower lately- ranunculus
i love this tiny little bottle
a flower frog being used for it's intended purpose (i hardly ever do that, even though i have tons of them)!
a little candle glow
a nice little collection
my mom even brought over her vintage Lu-Ray plates to match the palette for the day
we ate kind of late, so the photos aren't great, but we had a wonderful dinner of pork loin, asparagus, roasted potatoes and glazed carrots.
the day ended with the first cheesecake i've made in probably 9 years (which was also a belated birthday cake for my mister).

how was your easter? if you've shared your photos on your blog or photo site, i'd love for you to leave the link in the comments so we can all see!

finds to fancy

i know it's super late in the day, but i didn't have anything good to share this morning so i decided that instead of picking something less than awesome for finds to fancy, i'd wait and post after i hit the estate sales. here's what i fancy most from my finds today...

it's a glass battery jar! up until about the 1930's batteries consisted of conductive liquids and a few other components and were housed in large, usually rectangular, glass jars. i've been looking for one for awhile now, to use as a terrarium, and spotted this Pyrex one today. it even has little hand holds molded into the glass on the sides!

what have you found lately? i'd love to share it here! send me a message at danae{at}gatherandhuntvintage{dot}com and we'll talk!

A Curated Life

{all photos by The Ravenna Girls}

today's curated life collection comes from Brianne, one of The Ravenna Girls...

about her collection, Brianne writes:

"About ten years ago, turquoise became my favorite color by far, and many a collection was born. All my friends and family know that I love anything turquoise and vintage, so they're often on the lookout for perfect finds, along with me. Since becoming a homeowner, I've amassed a beautiful collection on turquoise vessels for use around the house. From pitchers and carafes, to vases and glasses, and even sale and pepper shakers, I can mix and match a turquoise table top in mere minutes. My favorite item is the enamel Dansk pitcher that I found at an estate consignment shop in Connecticut. I also very much treasure the pair of Vernonware Anytime salt and pepper shakers that were given to me by my grandmother while she was still alive. As you can see, I love love turquoise and incorporate one of these pieces into almost every table setting to me smiling".

thanks so much for sharing your turquoise collection with us Brianne! there are so many fun pieces in there! i think i like the glass carafe/decanter the best.

do you have a collection you'd be willing to share with us? i'd love to talk to you! just email me at danae{at}gatherandhuntvintage{dot}com.

gratitude

happy wednesday everyone! it's an extra happy day for me because the migraine i've been battling for the last two days has finally lifted so i can start getting caught up on life!

my first task of the day is washing a whole lot of dishes, and while i'm full of gratitude for just about everything today (spending days on end wishing you could remove your own head can put a lot into perspective), whenever i have to wash dishes i'm grateful for this view...

this horse hangs above our sink, and it always makes me smile. i think it was the front of some sort of ticket machine, possibly from a race track or circus. i found it in someone's back yard that was having a really weird (and super awesome) junk sale. my friend Abbi and i found a huge pile of good stuff at that sale, but this is probably my favorite piece. it was in rough shape when i found it, but with a little elbow grease and my husbands help removing a bunch of rusty, broken mechanical bits from the back so we could hang it, it looks pretty awesome now!

i love this piece because it brings some fun to a task that's necessary but boring, it's super unusual, and it reminds me of a lovely friend who i don't see very often these days.

what are you grateful for today?

finds to fancy

happy friday everyone!

i'm taking the day off from a finds to fancy post, so i can enjoy my time in California, but to tide you over, i'd love for you to check out a site i mentioned earlier this week...

{photo via My Favorite Find}
My Favorite Find, the new venture from The Farm Chicks' Serena Thompson, is like a 24/7 finds to fancy post! check it out today to see what others are finding, and even add your own (but make sure to share them with me too!).

i know you'll love it!

i'll see you all next, week, when i'm back in Seattle! have a great weekend- hope you find lots of good stuff out there !

a curated life

i didn't have a reader submission for today's curated life, but last night as we pulled into our motel in Pasadena i spotted a cool old motel sign and a little inspiration hit me, so instead of sharing a collection of things i've gathered, it's a collection of photos i've snapped over the last few years!

i love old metal signs, especially if they also happen to be neon and i can never resist photographing the really great ones when i see them.

i'm a little curious if they really still have waterbeds! can you imagine?

happy thursday from Pasadena! the mister and i arrived last night and so far are enjoying this sunny city! if you follow gather and hunt on the various social media outlets, then you've probably seen some of these photos, but if not- here's a peek at our trip so far...

preparing for takeoff

love flights when you can watch the sun set

do we look excited?

a little late night snack at Tops- a great little burger joint that's been around since the 50's!

the first palm tree of the morning. palm trees make me feel like i'm a totally different land- they're so different from any trees i've ever lived around!

before i dropped the mister off for the day we took a quick stroll around campus and snapped some shots (nice face i'm making in this one eh?)

love the desert vegetation we don't see up in the NW

the mister outside the library he will be spending loads of time at in the coming years

little outfit snap, complete with palm tree in the background!
the mister has meetings on campus all day, so i'm playing it solo and checking out Pasadena. i'm currently sitting in Intelligentsia, enjoying a latte and the work space, but i'm heading out soon to check out the shops, scout out potential places for me to set up shop in the future, and gather some photos for today's curated life post (an unusual, but fun, one today) which i'll post later this afternoon!

hope your thursday is going great!

gratitude

today, as i make some last minute preparations for our trip to what will be our future home, i am grateful for our present home- the lovely Seattle...

from our landmarks...

to the beauty of every season here...

yes it may rain, a lot...

but the sun always comes back...

and the days end in beauty...

leading to lovely nights.

i'm excited for the adventure ahead of the mister and i, but Seattle will always hold a special place in my heart. i have loved this city and the people in it for the last 9 years and i always will, no matter where life may take me. i ♥ Seattle!

what do you have gratitude for today? leave a comment and let me know!

tomorrow, look for a special curated life post- direct from sunny California! and if you want to follow along on our SoCal adventure, find me on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram (my username is danaerolyn), or Instagrid for non-iPhone users)!

random roundup

today, instead of a tried and true post, i'd like to introduce another occasional feature: random roundup. sometimes there are things i'd love to share here, but they don't really fit into any particular category, so occasionally i'll just round them all up and share them anyway! here we go...

Significant Object Challenge
an object from the Significant Objects project
{photo via Significant Objects}

Rob Walker, who created the project Significant Objects (now a book), a challenge to writers to create a fictional backstory for weird and mundane objects, which were then auctioned off on Ebay with their new backstory, is at it again. together with Kurt Anderson, Walker picked three objects from a Manhattan thrift store and is challenging you to create a backstory for the object and submit it. Walker will judge the entries and choose a winner. the prize? the object itself! here's a little video with more:

i love projects like these because they challenge us all to look at discarded objects with new eyes. one of the reasons i love what i do is the joy of seeing something with it's own history that i've gathered find new life and a continued history, whether in my own home, or one of my customer's homes. i think the Significant Objects challenge offers the chance to imagine a new life for the silly objects they picked.

to enter the challenge, visit Studio 360.

Kid Pickers

speaking of history, Mike Wolfe, of American Pickers fame, has a passion for experiencing history through the object he collects. now, he wants to pass that passion on to a new generation with his new project, Kid Pickers. the project, which features a secure (and COOPA compliant) website for kids to share their own finds and learn more about 'pickin', will also include events (with proceeds going to charity) at Mike's Nashville Antique Archeology store, as well as a book for kids.

it's exciting to see a new generation getting excited about history through the things of the past, and it sounds like Kid Pickers is a great place to get your child started in pickin'.

My Favorite Find

{photo via My Favorite Find}
another website, that just debuted last week, offerring a place for anyone to share the things they find, comes from the lovely Serena Thompson from The Farm Chicks. Serena started My Favorite Find as a place for people to go to share their vintage/antique/junk finds, as well as find information about events and shops in their area where new things can be found.

i had mixed emotions when the site first launched, because i've been working on some similar functionality to add to the mix here at Gather and Hunt and it always bums me out when someone beats me to the punch (this happens to me frequently it seems!), but all that's faded because My Favorite Find is really a great site with helpful resources, a good interface, and an amazing woman at the helm! it definitely meets a need in the vintage world and it's exciting to see people's finds added daily! i encourage you to stop by and explore the site!

What's Country Now

{photo via Heather Bullard}
i wouldn't necessarily consider my style to be 'country', but i do love Country Living magazine, especially the direction they've taken over the last few years. i always find decorating inspiration, as well as recipes and project ideas in the pages.

recently, Country Living put out a 'What's Country Now' issue, highlighting their editors picks for all the trends in country. it's a great issue with a lot of really cool things and people featured, but they're expanding on the topic on their website and recently did a post asking some bloggers 'What's Country Now'?

{photo via Wisteria}

the bloggers featured include:

Serena, who i just mentioned, from The Farm Chicks and My Favorite Find
Victoria Smith from SF Girl By Bay
Amy Merrick from Emerson Merrick and Design Sponge
Heather Bullard from Heather Bullard (who also styled the cover of the March issue)
Eddie Ross from Eddie Ross

and many more!

even if the term 'country' makes you cringe and brings up images of blue wallpaper borders with geese, i think you may be surprised at what you find on the Country Living site- give it a try!

what random things are you excited about this week? share your links in the comments so we can all join in!

{original photo via}

the mister and i are headed to southern California in a few days and i am really looking forward to some sunshine and warmer temps! it's not really a vacation, since we're visiting in order to check out the campus where Bill has been accepted into a PhD program and to get a sense of where we'd like to look for our new home down there (barring any major obstacles, it looks like we'll be moving to SoCal at the end of the summer!), i'm hoping we'll have at least an afternoon to do something fun and enjoy the sunshine!

vintage postcard available at Moodys Collectibles

now, i've only been to the Los Angeles area once, when i was in college, so most of my notions about it are based off of television, with a few of the blogs i've started following from folks who live down there mixed in. in fact, until about a month ago i was really not too keen on the idea of moving down there, but now i'm actually feeling excited for the change and have been scouring the internet for inspiration! if you're a native to the area, please don't laugh too much at my naivete, but these are a few of the things i've been dreamin' of since we started planning this adventure...

{photo via Liz Law}
possibly the thing i am most excited for- the Rose Bowl Flea Market, which happens in Pasadena, where we'll be living! unfortunately since we're not visiting on the 2nd weekend of the month i won't be able to check it out on this trip, so for now i'm living vicariously thorough other bloggers who have visited, including oh joy! who was so kind to let me use the lovely photo spread below, originally from one of her blog posts.

{photos and layout via oh joy!}
doesn't Pasadena look lovely? then again, what doesn't look lovely on a vintage postcard?
{image via Pasadena Snob}

maybe i'll trade the truck in for a vintage woody! it'd be great for hauling home things i find on the hunt right?
{photo via Tiki Pop}
i'll probably never be a surfer, but these lovely ladies in their amazing swimsuits make me wish i was!
{photo via National Geographic}
Ginger Rogers makes beach life look so effortless!
{photo via A Certain Cinema}
now life in SoCal will certainly be a bit different from life here in Seattle (most of our beaches are rocky and freezing!), so there are a a few things on my California dreamin' shopping list...

{photo via and suit available at Best of Times Vintage}

{photo via and suit available at Guermantes Vintage}

{photo via and suit available at Little Stars Vintage}
{photo via and suit available at Created and Collected}
i'm normally a bit loathe to wear a bathing suit, but if i had one as cute as these i think i'd be a little more excited for days in the pool or at the beach!

{photo via and trunks available at ilonaanne}
{photo via and trunks available at Dingaling Vintage}
{photo via and trunks available at Jerry and Louise}

i don't think my mister would wear swim trunks like these in a million years, but i would be so pleased if he would!

{photo via and glasses available at Curious Crow Vintage}

{photo via and glasses available at I Found Vintage}

{photo via and glasses available at Retro Eyewear}

{photo via and glasses available at Vita Bread}

i certainly don't need another pair of sunglasses (i have a bit of an addiction), but if i did- i'd want all of these!

{photo via and bag available at A Little Modern}
{photo via and bag available at CZ Vintage}
{photo via and bag available at Pineapple Mint}
{photo via and bag available at Sorcery}
no beach trip is complete without a cute tote to carry everything you need right? and with these straw and plastic options you can just shake the sand right out!

now i'm even more excited for our trip! i'd probably better start packing! hopefully this cold/flu thing i've been battling will go ahead and die before we leave town- travelling when you're sick is the worst!

i hope your week is off to a great start! make sure to stop by throughout the week- Thursday and Friday i'll even be doing some special posts, direct from California!

finds to fancy

i don't often do outfit posts, but i do love fashion, especially vintage fashion. now, vintage clothing that fits can be a little tricky to find when you're larger than a size 14 (like my 18/20 sized self), and i often find myself discouraged and tempted to just stop looking for vintage clothes for myself. every now and then though, i hit a hot streak- finding fun things that actually fit! i think i'm on a hot streak this month and thought i'd share some of my finds today! i hope that those of you who have a hard time finding vintage in your size will be inspired to keep looking- you never know when your very own hot streak is gonna hit!

sweater: Red Light vintage, shorts and shoes: thrifted vintage

love the colors of the embroidery!

can you tell i'm ready for spring? despite some freak late-winter snow storms, we've had a number of unseasonably sunny days in Seattle, which has kicked my spring fever into overdrive! there are some cherry blossom trees outside our building, and i've been checking on them every day to see if today will be the day they bloom- i don't want to miss it! come on spring!

blouse, skirt, and shoes: thrifted vintage

haven't tied a shirt up since i was in grade school- it's perfect for this outfit though!

the little gold tone clips are removable
add the fact that we're taking a short trip to southern California next week (more on that next Monday) to my rabid spring fever and i'm practically leaving the house in shorts and sandals, even though the temps have only been in the 40's!

dress and sandals: thrifted vintage, belt: target

i don't think these sandals have ever been worn!

i'm definitely packing these outfits for our trip next week! maybe i can even get the mister to take some photos so i can do a proper outfit post (like with a person inside the clothes and everything!). can't hardly wait to get down to sunny SoCal!

what have you found this week? i'd love to share your finds on an upcoming finds to fancy- just email me at danae{at}gatherandhuntvintage{dot}com!

as i mentioned yesterday, i've been under the weather and stuck in bed for a bit now. last night as i was wracking my brain for curated life post ideas for today, i happened to glance at the mirror on my dresser and noticed this great hat i've had hanging off of it for a few months now- inspiration struck and today i'm sharing my vintage hat collection with you!

i think i started collecting hats around age 7. i would pick them up at the garage and estate sales my mom would take me to. unfortunately i've gone through several phases where i decide i don't want to keep collecting them so i'm on collection #3 now, and don't have any of those hats from when i was a kid.

despite missing those hats i found all those years ago, i feel like the current collection is pretty wonderful. from these colorful numbers above...

to a few classic black options...

to some extra fancy toppers, they are all lovely in their own way. oh, and if you're wondering- yes, i actually wear mine!

gratitude

i'm confined to bed this morning, with what i hope doesn't turn out to be appendicitis (don't worry, i'll go to the doctor!). that said, today's post will be short and sweet (and instagram-ed).

today i'm grateful for something lovely to look at on these days when i'm stuck in bed.

with more of those days than i would like, between the migraines and the fibromyalgia, so it's nice to have this great map hanging on the wall across the room. the colors are so perfectly beautiful, especially in the morning light, and it helps me refresh my knowledge of (what little is still current) European geography to boot!

what do you have gratitude for today?

tried and true

today's tried and true product is actually what inspired the series in the first place! i was also pleased to see that in last week's comments, today's pick was mentioned by Brianne as her tried and true! so here we go...

it's Bon Ami powder cleanser. Bon Ami, which is french for 'good friend' has been around since 1886 and though they have updated the formula to make it even more eco-friendly than it already was, the original formula is still available as well. both products have a very small list of ingredients, and everything they contain is biodegradable. the original formula, which comes in a red can, contains only tallow and feldspar. the updated formula, which is vegan, comes in a yellow can (like mine), and is more widely available, contains five ingredients: limestone, feldspar, biodegradable cleaning agents, soda ash and baking soda. the cleaners contain no perfumes, dyes, or chemicals and is hypoallergenic. if that wasn't enough, a 14 oz (recycled and recyclable) can of the stuff costs less than two dollars!

many of you might remember Bon Ami from science classes- lab glass can be safely cleaned with original Bon Ami, but it works wonders on all kinds of things around the house too!  either formulas are fantastic on stainless steel, enamel coated cast iron, tile, chrome, and linoleum. the original formula is also especially effective for glass, and can transform vintage pyrex baking dishes that have baked on grease splatter built up over the years.

the packaging, though it hasn't remained exactly the same through the years, has a timelessness to it, and the little chick is the original. i found a great slideshow of the various ads Bon Ami has used over the years on their website, and grabbed a few images to share here.

love that they're using a man in this one!
{photo via Bon Ami}

ah, if only i looked this adorable while cleaning the kitchen!
{photo via Bon Ami}

amusing little play on words from the 80's
{photo via Bon Ami}

do you use Bon Ami? i'd love to know what you use it for!

as always, if you have your own tried and true product, i'd love to share it here! send me an email at danae{at}gatherandhuntvintage{dot}com.

new arrivals

i added some fun things to the space at the fremont vintage mall this weekend! have a look...

baby brownie with case and a brownie 13 MM (plus that awesome Super 37 that came in a few weeks ago)

fun projector reels- how would you use them?

vintage office supplies are so wonderful- especially compared to today's ugly plastic stuff

ah crewel, so perfectly retro

these aren't new, but i moved them and i just love the pattern- buy one or the whole set!

lovely south american woven wall hanging- great colors!

should have photographed this one at home- bad photo, but a really cool lamp!

i'm feeling extra ambitious today and am working on a 2nd Tuesday post- a look into the 'archives' (aka, stuff i'm saving for the farm chicks show), so stop by this afternoon and take a peek!  i just discovered my camera made a little trip to my mister's work today, so no archives post today. oops!

oh, and if you didn't follow along on last friday's finds to fancy- the live edition, i've just added all the photos to the original post, so scroll down and have a gander at all the fun stuff we found!

today's the day! the bestie and i get to hit some estate sales together! it's been a very, very long time since we've done that and i am so excited!

since we'll be on the road all day (heading out to the first sale at 6:30am) i thought i'd try something a little different for this week's finds to fancy post- we're going live!

kind of love those early morning drives in the truck- it can be so beautiful out there!

all day long i'll be snapping instagram shots of what we're gathering and you can follow along three different ways:

one. instagram. if you're an instagram user- follow me! my username is danaerolyn. if you don't have an iphone or aren't an instagram user, you can still follow via my instagrid.

two/three. twitter/facebook. i'll be sharing today's shots on both the gather and hunt facebook page and twitter account. if you don't already 'like' the g&h facebook page- i'd love for you to click that little button today! i've also been having a lot of fun interacting with readers over on twitter, so feel free to 'follow' me as well!

now if you don't really do the social media thing- no worries- i'll post all the photos here later!

okay, ready? let's head out on the hunt! see you on the road!

ha ha- a very flattering shot of me!
oh, and as always- i want to see your finds! email them to me at danae{at}gatherandhuntvintage{dot}com so i can share them here on a future friday!
